In a recent Live with Kelly and Ryan episode, Kelly Ripa talked about her mother’s experience in the hospital and her perception of health workers. She took her time to enlighten her co-host, Ryan Seacrest, and the audience on the matter, detailing, “I’ve got to tell you something, until you — and all people go through this, you don’t really realize what gems hospital workers are.”
She also praised the medical team and everyone who made the stay of her mom, Esther Ripa, awesome, “Not just the surgeons and the physicians assistants, but those ICU nurses are just so special and so fabulous at allaying anybody’s fears, anxieties and just keeping everyone in the know.”
How Kelly Ripa took care of her mother in the hospital
While taking care of an 81-year-old woman who just had a major heart surgery might prove to be a struggle, the All My Children star shared how she coped, “Between children and parents, you spend a great deal of your time — if you’re like me, what I like to lovingly call the sandwich generation — in hospitals,” she said. “And you learn that you only ask yes and no questions.”
In an effort to shed more light, she claims that patience and persistence is key when taking care of older people. “It’s like being a trial lawyer, but you’re in a hospital,” she continued. “Are you hot? Are you cold? Do you want dad to stop talking?”
Esther Ripa had an amazing haircut in the hospital
She also revealed a memorable instance during her mother’s admission when they learned that wearing a personal scarf during surgical procedures was against hospital policy. “I will say this, we were [at the hospital] late last night and very early this morning. My mom was wearing this turban, if you will, a wrap on [her] head. And she wouldn’t wear it into surgery; they don’t allow that.”
Kelly hilariously claimed that when she got to the clinic on the scheduled surgery day, she noticed her father, Joseph Ripa, had transitioned to a professional hairdresser overnight to give Esther a nice haircut. “And this morning I see that my mom was sporting the choicest French girl bob I’ve ever seen,” she told Ryan. “She goes, ‘Ugh, I didn’t want to deal with it. I didn’t want to deal with having to worry about my hair, so I had your father cut it with the kitchen scissors.”
Interestingly, the TV host hasn’t been able to get over the beautiful hairstyle, which has reinforced a thought in her that maybe her father was in the wrong line of work as a county clerk. “My dad has missed his calling as a hairstylist,” she emphasized to Ryan, “When I tell you how chic — I’m seriously thinking about giving my dad the kitchen sheers and saying, ‘Give me the S. Ripa. Give me the bob!’ I’m telling you, it’s the cutest haircut.” Sadly, she shared no picture of the “amazing” French bob.
