Brian Wilson is one of the original members of The Beach Boys. Many of their most popular hit songs were featured on their 11th studio album called Pet Sounds. The album was released in 1966 and includes “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows.”
Brian said that ’66 was a big year for the group and making that particular album was a “religious experience.” He said, “The record spoke for itself, and it was a religious experience. Carl and I were into prayer. We held prayer sessions in our house on Laurel Way. ‘Dear God. Please let us bring music to people.’ It happened. A cool trip. A lot of people say to me that Pet Sounds got them through high school or college.”
Brian, who wrote many of the band’s songs, believes that music can be very healing for people. He added, “I think my music has helped people a little bit. I think it is therapy for people. I think Marvin Gaye’s music is very therapeutic. I think Diana Ross’ music is very therapeutic, to name just a couple.”
His favorite? He shared, “Nothing as good as [the Ronettes’] ‘Be My Baby.’ We couldn’t produce records with that big sound. We had good engineers and good players, the Wrecking Crew. I had Phil Spector’s players.”
These days, The Beach Boys’ music still rings true for a lot of people. Many of their songs have over a million hits on streaming services such as Spotify. You can also listen to the 50th-anniversary version of Pet Sounds on many streaming platforms. What’s your favorite song from the album?
