December wouldn’t be December without the yearly run of Christmas television specials. Do you remember sitting by the TV, eating dinner, or drinking hot chocolate, or munching on holiday cookies while watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jack Frost, or Frosty the Snowman? “But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?” With a song, a television special, and a few features in other media, no one can forget Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.
It’s a timeless tale about self acceptance, and that being yourself is always the best option—-it’s okay to be a misfit. Rudolph learns that after a few adventures: running into an elf who’s an aspiring dentist, meeting the miner Yukon Cornelius, visiting the Island of Misfit Toys, and facing the Abominable Snowman. And with his nose so bright, he was finally able to guide Santa’s sleigh that night.
The program has everything a Christmas special needs. It has the family fun adventure, the classic holiday songs, and of course Santa Claus. It’s tradition for it to air in the beginning, or mid, December, and, for many of us, it is tradition not to miss it. So, that being said, how about you turn on that TV, cozy up, and watch it.
Happy Holidays!
Sad to say, this is not the original 1964 version of Rudolph Thr Red Nosed Reindeer. No, far from it. The original version, which first aired on Dec. 6,1964 on the ‘GENERAL ELECTRIC FANTASY HOUR On NBC did not have the ending with Rudolph and Santa returning to the Island of Misfit Toys. That ending was filmed for the 1965 repeat after a flood of letters from viewers wondering I they went back to the island for the misfit toys. There are other differences between the original 1964 version and this one that are quite interesting . This version, seen in this post in the one that has been aired since 1965.
One version has Hermie and Rudolph singing “Fame and Fortune”. and the other one, the one that is aired every year, has them singing “We’re a Couple of Misfits”.
