UPDATED 6/4/2024 Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross played a couple in a film before they were one in real life, the future lovers having met while on the set of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969. At the time, Sam was new to acting while Katharine was already a leading lady. She got her big break as Elaine Robinson in The Graduate (1967), which had been preceded by Shenandoah (1965), Mister Buddwing (1965) and The Singing Nun (1966). They didn’t share scenes and reportedly didn’t talk while on the set of the film. Sam was too shy to talk to her. As he said, “I didn’t dare try to talk to her then. She was the leading lady. I saw her a lot because I knew who she was and I was just another guy on the lot at that point and time. As things turned out, they were both cast in the 1978 film The Legacy, where they played a couple. At the time, Katharine was on her fourth marriage, but it was already declining. She had been married to Joel Fabiani from 1960 to 1962, John Marion from 1964 to 1967, Conrad Hall from 1969 to 1974 and, at the time of her meeting with Sam, Gaetano Lisi from 1974 until 1979.
