Rock Hudson died in Beverly Hills on October 2, 1985. He was 59. Forty-one years have passed, and his final months are remembered as a turning point in how America talked about AIDS. He was born Roy Harold Scherer Jr. in Winnetka, Illinois, on November 17, 1925. Hollywood gave him a new name and made him one of its most dependable leading men. He broke through in 'Magnificent Obsession' in 1954 and starred opposite Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean in 'Giant' two years later. Audiences adored his romantic comedies with Doris Day, which began with 'Pillow Talk' in 1959 and continued with 'Lover Come Back' and 'Send Me No Flowers.' Television viewers knew him as the police commissioner on 'McMillan & Wife' in the 1970s. Day guarded his privacy for years. "Many, many people would ask me, you know, 'Is Rock Hudson really gay?' And I said, 'It's something I will not discuss,'" she once recalled, according to CBS News. His illness stunned audiences who had known him for decades as Hollywood's handsome, seemingly invincible leading man. At the time, AIDS was widely misunderstood, and people living with the disease faced enormous fear and discrimination. According to the Los Angeles Times, AIDS hotlines across the country were flooded with hundreds of calls following the news, with people seeking information about the disease, asking how to protect themselves, and offering to support research. Just days before his diagnosis became public, Hudson reunited with Doris Day for what would become his final television appearance. On July 15, 1985, he visited her home in Carmel, California, to film an episode of Doris Day's Best Friends. Day was shocked by his frail appearance and dramatic weight loss, but Hudson insisted on going through with the taping. He had told her he was suffering from the flu, never revealing the seriousness of his condition. After his death, Day recalled how much the reunion had meant to him. The episode aired later that October, giving fans one final opportunity to see the beloved Pillow Talk co-stars together. Elizabeth Taylor Turned Her Grief Into A Mission GIANT, from left, James Dean, Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, at the wrap party, September 1, 1955 CBS News writes that Elizabeth Taylor was among the friends who stood by Hudson during his final weeks. According to biographer Mark Griffin, she visited him at his Beverly Hills home and was disturbed by the distance others kept from him because of his illness. Rather than treating him as someone to fear, Taylor climbed into bed beside him and held him. His suffering strengthened her determination to fight the stigma surrounding AIDS. In 1985, she became a founding national chair of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, or amfAR, and went on to become one of the world's most recognizable advocates for people affected by HIV and AIDS. His illness became public in the summer of 1985. Weeks before his death, a statement from him was read at an AIDS benefit. "I am not happy that I am sick. I am not happy that I have AIDS," it said. "But if that is helping others, I can at least know my own misfortune has had some positive worth." CBS News reported those words in its look back at his life. A $250,000 contribution from Hudson also helped Taylor and Dr. Michael Gottlieb launch the foundation that became part of amfAR. Day lived to be 97, and DYR remembered her when she died in 2019. Their films together still play like sunshine. Hudson did not live to see the medical advances that would eventually transform HIV treatment, but his final public message became part of a turning point in the fight against AIDS. His illness brought attention to people who had too often been ignored, while friends like Elizabeth Taylor continued the work of raising awareness and fighting discrimination. Four decades later, the actor remains remembered not only for his unforgettable performances, but also for the compassion his final words encouraged others to show.
