The Only ‘MacGyver’ Cast Members Still Alive Today

by Dana Daly

Published October 27, 2026

MacGyver

Week after week on ABC, a man with a mullet, a Swiss Army knife, and a roll of duct tape talked his way out of situations that would have finished off any other TV hero. Angus MacGyver never carried a gun. He picked locks with paper clips, plugged acid leaks with chocolate bars and built whatever the moment needed out of whatever was lying around, and somewhere in America a kid always tried it at home. If you grew up with that brassy theme song, you probably still check your pockets for something useful when the car breaks down.

MacGyver ran for seven seasons, from 1985 to 1992, and it gave television something rare: an action hero who solved problems with his head. The Phoenix Foundation became a second home for viewers, filled with a boss who worried like a father, a pilot who could not stay out of trouble, a villain who refused to stay dead and a grandfather who taught MacGyver what kind of man to be. More than three decades after the final episode, here is what became of the original MacGyver cast and who is still with us today.

Is John Anderson still alive?

When MacGyver needed advice he could not find in a chemistry book, he went to his grandfather. John Anderson played Harry Jackson, the gruff, loving “Grandpa Harry,” and he turned up in five episodes between 1985 and 1990. Harry was the family MacGyver kept coming home to, and Anderson gave those scenes a weathered warmth that explained a great deal about the grown man we watched every week.

That face had been on screens for decades by then. Anderson was the used car salesman “California Charlie” who sells Janet Leigh’s Marion Crane a car in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho in 1960, and he rode through Westerns like Ride the High Country and Soldier Blue. He looked so much like Abraham Lincoln that he played the 16th president three times, including in The Lincoln Conspiracy in 1977. His August 1992 death notice in The Washington Post credited him with more than 500 television roles, from The Twilight Zone to Gunsmoke.

Sadly, no. John Anderson died of a heart attack at his home in Sherman Oaks, California, on August 7, 1992, the same year MacGyver signed off. He was 69. The man who played MacGyver’s mentor was gone first, and the cast’s next loss would hit the Phoenix Foundation even harder.

Is Dana Elcar still alive?

Pete Thornton was the boss every agent wishes for. Dana Elcar played the Phoenix Foundation’s director of field operations, the man who sent MacGyver on impossible missions and then paced the floor until he came back. Their friendship was the backbone of the series, and Richard Dean Anderson never forgot what Elcar did for him off camera. “At a time when I had very little business being called an actor, he made things so easy for me,” Anderson said after Elcar’s death, according to The Seattle Times.

Elcar was a seasoned pro long before MacGyver. He played FBI agent Polk in The Sting in 1973, worked through Dark Shadows, Columbo and Mission: Impossible, and spent two seasons as Colonel Lard on Baa Baa Black Sheep. On stage, he originated the role of Ben in the American premiere of Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter in 1962.

Then, in the middle of the show’s run, Elcar told the producers he was losing his sight to glaucoma. Instead of writing him out, they wrote it in. Beginning with the sixth season episode “Blind Faith,” Pete’s failing eyesight became part of the story, and by the series’ end Elcar was almost completely blind. He later recalled the producers telling him, “The fact that you are losing your eyesight does not mean you have forgotten how to act.”

Dana Elcar died on June 6, 2005, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, California, of complications from pneumonia, as reported by the Television Academy. He was 77, and he left behind his longtime companion, Thelma M. Garcia, along with a son and three daughters. The two men who looked after MacGyver are gone, but the man who kept trying to kill him is very much still around.

Is Michael Des Barres still alive?

Every hero needs a nemesis, and MacGyver’s was Murdoc. Michael Des Barres played the master assassin with a taste for disguises in nine episodes from 1987 to 1991, which made him the most frequent villain the show ever had. Murdoc fell off cliffs and vanished in explosions, and somehow he always came back for one more round.

Television was almost a side job. Des Barres was a British rock singer who fronted Silverhead and Detective, and in 1985 he replaced Robert Palmer in The Power Station, singing with the band at Live Aid that summer. After MacGyver, he kept working steadily as an actor in The New WKRP in Cincinnati, Melrose Place, Under Siege, and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. When CBS rebooted MacGyver, he returned in 2018 and 2019 as Nicholas Helman, the man who trained Murdoc.

Michael Des Barres is alive and 78, born January 24, 1948, in Hove, England, and he has never really slowed down. He hosts a daily show on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on SiriusXM, and he once joked to TheWrap, “People know me as the only DJ who wears makeup and insists on good lighting.” In February 2026, he released a new single, “Kiss or Kill Me,” on Rum Bar Records. “It’s now or never,” he told The Big Takeover, calling the song “an anthem of love.” Murdoc’s favorite target had a buddy who caused nearly as much trouble, and that actor is still working too.

Is Bruce McGill still alive?

If MacGyver ever got roped into a scheme that went sideways, Jack Dalton was usually behind it. Bruce McGill played the fast-talking bush pilot and soldier of fortune, a lovable con man whose get-rich ideas dragged his best friend into one jam after another. Fans adored Jack because he was everything Mac was not: loud, reckless, and completely sure of himself.

McGill had already earned his place in movie history as Daniel Simpson “D-Day” Day in Animal House in 1978, the biker who played the “William Tell Overture” by drumming on his own throat. He brought that same trick to MacGyver, tapping out a tune to lull a child to sleep in the episode “Rock the Cradle.” After the show he became one of Hollywood’s most dependable character actors. He appeared in The Insider, Ali and Collateral, and he played CIA director George Tenet in W. and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. TV audiences know him just as well as Detective Vince Korsak, who spent seven seasons on Rizzoli & Isles from 2010 to 2016.

Bruce McGill is alive and 76, born July 11, 1950. Lately, he has been playing national security adviser Monty Hollar on the Paramount+ thriller Lioness, and TVLine noted in September 2026 that he has appeared in all three seasons. He also returned to the MacGyver universe once, as Detective Greer in an episode of the reboot. Jack Dalton had a habit of bringing trouble home, and one of the women in Mac’s life brought something else: a future superstar.

Is Teri Hatcher still alive?

Before she was Lois Lane, Teri Hatcher was Penny Parker, the chatty, dreamy, struggling actress who kept stumbling into danger and needing MacGyver to get her out. She appeared in six episodes from 1986 to 1989, and Penny’s wide-eyed charm made her one of the most memorable guest characters on the show.

The world caught up with Hatcher fast. From 1993 to 1997, she starred as Lois Lane opposite Dean Cain on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and in 2004 she became Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives, a role she played for all eight seasons. It won her the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, in 2005. She has kept busy since with TV movies, the voice of the robot Muthr in the animated series WondLa, and red carpets like the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Teri Hatcher is alive and 61, born December 8, 1964, in Palo Alto, California, and this week she started the biggest stage job of her career. On October 20, 2026, she took over the role of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada musical at London’s Dominion Theatre, succeeding her old Desperate Housewives co-star Vanessa Williams. WhatsOnStage reported that she is scheduled to stay through February 6, 2027, and in announcing the role she said that “very few can compare to THE Miranda Priestly.” That leaves one cast member, the man whose name was on the show.

Is Richard Dean Anderson still alive?

Richard Dean Anderson was in nearly every scene of MacGyver for seven years, and he always understood what made the character different. “He’s not one of those supermacho guys with their shirts unbuttoned to their navels,” he told People in January 1987. “MacGyver doesn’t carry weapons.” The show, he said, taught that “you think before you punch someone in the face.” A whole generation of kids took that lesson to heart, along with a healthy respect for duct tape.

Anderson went from one long run to another. In 1997, he became Colonel Jack O’Neill on Stargate SG-1, leading the team through the gate until 2005, and he kept returning in Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate: Universe and, the 2008 film Stargate: Continuum. He stepped back from the grind partly to spend time with his daughter, Wylie, born in 1998. He has also poked fun at his own legend, voicing himself on The Simpsons and slipping back into MacGyver’s jacket for a 2006 MasterCard commercial. Off screen, he has given years to causes he cares about, serving on the board of advisors of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and supporting the Waterkeeper Alliance.

Richard Dean Anderson is alive and 76, born January 23, 1950, in Minneapolis. Earlier this month he was a guest at San Diego Comic-Con Málaga in Spain, where he told the German site Serienjunkies why he passed on the CBS reboot. “I didn’t think it represented what we had created,” he said, adding that it became “more of a formulaic cop show, with more weapons involved.” He did admit a little envy: “I wish we’d had their budget back then with our MacGyver.”

Asked what MacGyver would be like now, Anderson pictured him “old, maybe not quite as sharp, and certainly not as physically capable anymore.”

Would he ever come back for one more mission?

“Maybe,” he said, “if I were surrounded by the same people again.” Pete and Grandpa Harry are gone, but Murdoc, Jack Dalton, and Penny Parker are all still out there, and for a show built on friendship, that sounds like exactly the right answer.
