Willie Nelson is 93 years old, and this week he is playing three shows in five days. Nelson and Neil Young are sharing a bill tonight, Tuesday, September 22, at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and again Thursday, September 24, at the TD Pavilion at the Mann in Philadelphia, according to Consequence and Parade. Then on Saturday, September 26, he headlines Farm Aid in Virginia Beach, the first time the festival has come to Virginia, per the Farm Aid press release. Nelson was born April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas, according to Wikipedia, and his birthday is famous for having been written down wrong by the doctor.
Farm Aid is turning 41. Nelson founded it in 1985 with Young and John Mellencamp after Bob Dylan wondered aloud at Live Aid whether some of that money might help American farmers, per Wikipedia. The first concert raised more than $9 million. The organization says it has now raised more than $90 million for family farmers. Young, who is 80, brings his band the Chrome Hearts. Mellencamp, 74, is on the bill too, along with Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, Margo Price, Nathaniel Rateliff, Turnpike Troubadours, Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, Sierra Ferrell, and Nelson’s son Lukas, according to the release. The show is at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater.

“Family farmers grow our food and strengthen our communities,” Nelson said in the Farm Aid announcement. “And when farmers struggle like they are now, communities feel it too.” He has been saying some version of that for four decades, usually right before picking up Trigger, the battered Martin guitar he bought for $750 in 1969 that now carries a hole worn through the top and more than a hundred signatures, per Wikipedia. Fans watch every tour date with a certain caution these days, and Nelson has canceled shows for his health before. He has also kept coming back. Three nights this week with an old friend is not a farewell. It is just September.
