Nick Reiner has been indicted on charges of murdering his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner, marking a major development in the case surrounding their deaths. The 32-year-old has remained in custody without bail since authorities found the couple dead at their Brentwood home in December 2025.
According to Variety, the grand jury returned the indictment on July 20, and prosecutors unsealed it on Wednesday. Reiner pleaded not guilty to the revised charges. The indictment allows prosecutors to move the case toward trial without first presenting evidence during a preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors initially charged Reiner with two counts of murder and included a special circumstance alleging multiple murders. The grand jury indictment adds another special circumstance, “lying in wait.” If convicted, Reiner could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or potentially the death penalty because of the special-circumstance allegations.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the alleged killings as a serious betrayal of two people who loved and trusted the person accused of killing them. Hochman also said prosecutors hope the indictment will help move the case closer to trial and ultimately toward a resolution. Authorities have not yet announced a trial date, while Reiner’s next pretrial hearing will take place on September 15.
Legal Proceedings Continue As Reiner Remains In Custody
A public defender currently represents Reiner. His legal situation has also involved a separate dispute over funds that could affect his defense. In June, attorneys acting for him sought access to $1.5 million held in a trust account. They argued that releasing the money would allow him to rehire private defense attorney Alan Jackson, who briefly represented him earlier in the case. The petition states that Reiner loved his parents and remains devastated by their deaths. A probate court will consider the request separately, while Reiner maintains his innocence and awaits trial.
The case has drawn significant attention because of Rob Reiner’s long Hollywood career. The actor and director became known for playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family before establishing himself as a celebrated filmmaker. His directing credits included Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, and A Few Good Men.
