Classic television fans still hold a special place in their hearts for Bewitched, the beloved sitcom that mixed suburban family life with magical chaos. Decades after the show ended, former child star Erin Murphy has shared new insight into the relationships behind the scenes, especially after actor Dick York left the series in 1969.
According to Parade, Murphy revealed during an appearance on Billy Corgan’s podcast that Elizabeth Montgomery never spoke to York again after he departed the show. York stepped away from the series because of severe health problems linked to a painful back injury that later contributed to addiction struggles.
Dick York’s Departure Changed The Show Forever
York originally starred as Darrin Stephens opposite Montgomery’s Samantha Stephens during the show’s early seasons. However, his worsening health eventually forced him to leave the hit sitcom. Producers later replaced him with actor Dick Sargent without offering viewers an explanation for the character’s sudden new appearance.

Meanwhile, Erin Murphy explained that Montgomery approached her career in a highly professional way. While Murphy admired her deeply and considered her a role model growing up, she also realized later in life that Montgomery separated work from personal relationships. The actress reportedly moved on quickly once the series ended and rarely stayed connected with cast members afterward.
Erin Murphy Remembers Her TV Fathers Fondly
Even so, Murphy spoke warmly about both actors who played her television father during the sitcom’s run. She described York as deeply paternal both on and off set, noting that he treated her with genuine care during filming. His kindness left a lasting impression on the former child actress throughout her life.

In addition, she also maintained a close relationship with Sargent for years after the show ended. Fans continue to revisit the beloved sitcom decades later, and Erin Murphy’s memories offer a more personal look at the people who helped make the magical series such a television classic.
