Learn How To Adopt A Dog That Was “Too Nice” To Be A TSA Service Dog

Not all dogs are cut out to be a service dog. So, what happens when the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) determines that a dog will not be fit to be a service dog? They are up for adoption! Would you ever want to adopt one of these dogs?

The TSA may determine a dog “too nice.” Dogs that work with the TSA must sniff out drugs and other suspicious items and people. Some dogs are just too silly and friendly to be trained for this important job. This is good news though for those who are looking to adopt a sweet new friend.

You can adopt dogs through the TSA Canine Training Center Adoption Program without a fee. However, they are usually small puppies that require training and housebreaking and may require you to fly across the country to meet them.

If you are interested in adopting a dog through this program, you have to meet specific criteria. Here are the criteria according to the TSA’s website:

“You must have a fenced in yard at the time of applying. There should be no intentions of moving within six months of adopting a dog. Homes must abide by all local pet ordinances. You must agree to provide the dog with appropriate medical care, exercise, training, and companionship. All existing pets in the home must have current vaccinations and preventive care. The age of children in the home will be taken into consideration when selecting a dog.”

They may also ask for references and photos of your home and yard. If you apply on their website, your name goes on a waitlist. If any dogs come up as available, they will send photos and profiles to you. The only catch is that you have to meet any dogs you’re interested in San Antonio, Texas. If you don’t live there, the travel costs could rack up quickly, especially if you don’t find a dog that fits with your family right away.

There are other programs for adopting dogs that don’t make the cut in the service industry. Mission K9 and Service Dogs, Inc. are other great places to look up if you are interested in adopting a dog this way.
