  • 1956 – American singer, actor Pat Boone was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘I’ll Be Home.’
  • 1964 – The first edition of the official The Rolling Stones book was issued, priced at one and six, (the publication ran for 30 issues).
  • 1966 – Janis Joplin debuted on stage at the Avalon ballroom in San Francisco.
  • 1966 – The Beatles were first heard using reversed tape in the song “Rain.” It was a ‘B’ side to the song “Paperback Writer.”
  • 1967 – Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made To Love Her” was released.
  • 1967 – “Casino Royale” was #1 on the Easy Listening chart for a second week for Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass
  • 1967 – The 5th Dimension had a smash with “Up, Up and Away”, moving up on the chart from 83 to 44.
  • 1972 – Sammy Davis Jr started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Candy Man’, his only US No.1. The song was taken from the film ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’.
  • 1972 – The Rolling Stones double album Exile On Main Street went to No.1 on the UK chart, the bands seventh UK No.1 album. In 2010, the re-released album entered the UK chart at No.1, almost 38 years to the week after it first occupied that position. The Rolling Stones are the first act to ever have a studio album return to No.1 after it was first released.
  • 1974 – Elton John released the single “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”.
  • 1975 – The Eagles released the great album One of These Nights on Asylum Records.
  • 1978 – John Travolta and Olivia Newton John went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘You’re The One That I Want’ also No.1 in the UK.
  • 1978 – “Even Now” by Barry Manilow was #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart for the third week in a row.
  • 1983 – Chris Sievey of UK group The Freshies released the first computer game single. When played on a Sinclair ZX 81 computer via a record deck the lyrics of the song came on the screen.
  • 1988 – George Michael played the first of 6 sold-out nights at Earls Court in London, England, during his 137-date Faith World Tour.
  • 1989 – Bette Midler went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’, taken from the film ‘Beaches’, a No.5 hit in the UK.
  • 1989 – Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’, became her 18th UK Top 5 hit, a new record for a female artist.
  • 1991 – Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr kicked off an 8-date tour at the Gothic Theater in Denver. Other notable acts who’ve appeared include Death Cab for Cutie, The Fray, The Cranberries, Gavin Rossdale (of Bush), The Wallflowers, Rise Against, Blue Öyster Cult and The Black Keys.
  • 1995 – “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?” from Bryan Adams was #1 for a second week.

“TV/RADIO TODAY”

  • 1924 – The Republican National Convention was broadcast by NBC radio. It was the first political convention to be on radio.
  • 1989 – HBO aired the first episode of “Tales from the Crypt.”

  • 1903 – Binney & Smith Company began developing a product line of wax crayons. The product was named Crayola.
  • 1933 – Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were in a car accident on a rural road in north Texas. The third-degree burns suffered by Parker resulted in a pronounced limp for the rest of her life.
  • 1935 – Alcoholic Anonymous was founded by William G. Wilson and Dr. Robert Smith.
  • 1954 – General Motors announced the gas turbine bus had been produced successfully.
  • 1971 – The U.S. ended a 21-year trade embargo of China.
  • 1977 – In London, Joe Strummer and Topper Headon of The Clash were arrested for painting the band’s name on a wall in a hotel.
  • 1982 – Addie Harris from The Shirelles died of a heart attack after a show in Atlanta.
  • 1961 US No.1 & UK No.4 single ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’. Became the first all girl group to have a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • 1985 – Frank Sinatra was portrayed as a friend of organized crime in a “Doonesbury” comic strip. Over 800 newspapers carried the panel.

  • 1990 – Two members of 2 Live Crew were arrested in Hollywood, FL, on obscenity charges. The album had been judged as obscene by a federal judge.
  • 1992 – A judge in Los Angeles, CA, threw out a $25 million palimony suit against Rod Stewart. The suit had been brought by swimsuit model Kelly Emberg.
  • 1993 – It was announced by scientists that genetic material was extracted from an insect that lived when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.
  • 1993, Irish singer Sinead O’Connor took out a full-page ad in the Irish Times asking the public to “stop hurting me please.” O’Connor was still being criticized for ripping up a picture of the Pope during an appearance on Saturday Night Live the previous October.
  • 1998 – Steve Sanders (Oak Ridge Boys) was found dead at the age of 45. He had apparently died of a self-inflicted
