  • 1963 – The Beatles and The Rolling Stones meet for the first time during a Stones performance at the Crawdaddy Club. The music venue in Richmond, Surrey, also saw performances by Led Zeppelin, Long John Baldry, Elton John and & Rod Stewart.
  • 1964 – Peter and Gordon were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the John Lennonand Paul McCartney song ‘A World Without Love.’ The Duo’s only UK No.1.
  • 1965 – The Rolling Stones kicked off their third North American tour at the Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal, Canada. The 4,750-seat, multi-purpose arena was built in 1962.
  • 1965 – The Four Tops released the single ‘I Can’t Help Myself”
  • 1966 – Going Places by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass remained at #1 for the second of five weeks at the top of the Album chart .
  • 1966 – The Righteous Brothers enjoyed a third week at #1 with “(You’re My) Soul And Inspiration”
  • 1969 – The Beatles were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Get Back’ the group’s 16th UK No.1. Credited to “The Beatles with Billy Preston”, it was the Beatles’ only single that credited another artist, ‘Get Back’ was also the Beatles’ first single release in true stereo in the US.
  • 1971 – The Rolling Stones released their classic album Sticky Fingers in the UK. The band’s first release on their own label via Atlantic Records, the cover was designed by Andy Warhol, who was paid $15,000 for his effort
  • 1976 – Bob Marley and the Wailers began their 42-date tour at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.

  • 1983 – U2 kicked off their 48-date ‘War’ North American tour at The Carolina Concert For Children benefit, Chapel Hill, Carolina.
  • 1988 – The Dirty Dancing Soundtrack was at #1 on the U.S. Album chart
  • 1988 – Gloria Estefan & the Miami Sound Machine moved into the #1 slot on the Adult Contemporary chart with “Anything For You”.
  • 1988 – Whitney Houston broke a record held by the Bee Gees when she recorded her seventh straight #1 song with “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”.

  • 1954 – Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit his first major-league home run on this day.
  • 1985 – The Coca-Cola Company announced that it was changing its 99-year-old secret formula. New Coke was not successful, which resulted in the resumption of selling the original version.
  • 1989 – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played his last regular season game in the NBA.
  • 1987 – Carole King sued record company owner Lou Adler for breach of contract. King claimed that she was owed over $400,000 in royalties. She also asked for all rights to her old recordings.
