‘Seinfeld’ Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, 65, Is Unrecognizable With Gray Hair, And The Reason Is A First For Her

by Dana Daly

Published October 21, 2026

Julia Louis-Dreyfus spent nine seasons as Elaine Benes with a famous mane of dark curls. Fans scrolling past her latest photos this month could be forgiven for doing a double take. The 65-year-old actress now has a sleek, chin-length gray bob, and it has nothing to do with retirement or a quiet new chapter.

According to Parade, the silver hair belongs to Polly Wyeth, the character she plays in the Broadway revival of Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities. The production opened Sunday, October 18, 2026, at the Hudson Theatre. It is her Broadway debut, and her first time on any stage in more than four decades.

Louis-Dreyfus first showed off the look in a backstage selfie with co-star Allison Janney. “Doubling down on selfies on @desertcitiesbway with @allisonbjanney,” she wrote on Instagram, as Hello! and Parade both reported. She made clear Polly is no heroine.

The play is set in Palm Springs, where the Wyeths retreated after an old scandal pushed them out of political life. Polly is a retired writer and hostess married to Lyman, a former actor turned Republican party figure, played by Ed Harris. Their daughter Brooke, played by Lily Rabe, comes home with a memoir that threatens to drag a buried family scandal back into the open. Joe Keery of Stranger Things plays their son Trip. Janney plays Polly’s sister Silda.

Baitz’s stage directions describe Polly as “elegant and forthright and whip smart,” The New York Times reported. The tidy gray bob fits that kind of woman, and Hello! noted it replaces her signature dark brunette hair.

Tony winner John Benjamin Hickey directs the limited run, which began previews on September 29 and closes January 17, 2027. The play was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, according to Playbill.

So why would a woman with nothing left to prove take on the most frightening job of her career?

Louis-Dreyfus was candid with The New York Times about the nerves. “It’s terrifying,” she said of Broadway. “Really scary.” She also explained what pulled her toward it anyway. “My ambition is to find really juicy, tasty material for me to play with,” she said.

She told the paper she had missed the live connection of theater. “I want to have that connection, with not only the actors, but also with an audience,” she said. “I was craving it.” After the first week of rehearsals, she called the experience “thrilling and arduous and deeply fun and deeply exhausting.”

Her last stage credits came from her college years. As a theater student at Northwestern University, she performed professionally with a theater company co-founded by Brad Hall, the man she married in 1987. Then television came calling before she could finish her degree.

NBC hired Louis-Dreyfus for Saturday Night Live in 1982, when she was just 21. She stayed three seasons, through 1985, and she has never sugarcoated how hard it was to be one of the few women on the show. “It helped me define what my values were, it helped sharpen the skill set, it helped me know what I was not good at doing,” she told The New York Times.

Five years after leaving, she landed the part that made her a household name. Seinfeld ran on NBC from 1990 to 1998. Her Elaine, with the shove, the little kicks and the shout of “Get out!”, won her the 1996 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Jerry Seinfeld has since admitted one big mistake in its finale.

She went on to win Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for The New Adventures of Old Christine in 2006. Then came Selina Meyer on HBO’s Veep, which ran from 2012 to 2019. She won Lead Actress six years in a row for the role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, her 2017 win set the record for most Emmys won by a performer for a single role, passing Candice Bergen’s five wins for Murphy Brown.

All told, she holds 11 Primetime Emmy Awards. Eight are for acting, and three came as a producer when Veep won Outstanding Comedy Series.

Polly is a long way from Elaine and Selina. Louis-Dreyfus says the role has drawn on parts of her life the cameras never saw.

The past nine years have tested her family hard. On September 28, 2017, one day after her sixth straight Veep Emmy win, she announced she had breast cancer. She finished chemotherapy in January 2018. Then in January 2025, the Palisades fire destroyed the Pacific Palisades house she shared with Hall, as TheWrap and her own Instagram confirmed. The couple relocated to Santa Barbara. “I did not see that coming,” she told The New York Times.

She does not separate those losses from the work. Polly is fiercely protective of her family, and so is the woman playing her. “I’ve been fiercely protective and proud of that,” Louis-Dreyfus said of her own family. “So when aspects of that are at risk, with my health, with losing our home of 33 years…” Her own Instagram post after the fire described the house as a 31-year family home.

She and Polly sit on opposite ends of politics, she noted, but share a hunger for justice. And she made clear that the gray hair is not there to make Polly sympathetic. “That doesn’t mean she’s going to be a hero, necessarily,” she said with a smile. “Or a nice lady. We don’t play nice ladies here.”

The stage itself seems to be what she was really chasing. Describing how performing live makes her feel, she told the Times, “It’s what some people meditate to achieve. Everything else just goes away.”
