George Clooney Was Already The Set’s Prankster Guy Long Before Hollywood Fame

Where George Clooney got his start as a prankster

Long before George Clooney became an Oscar winner and one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading men, he was simply “George” to the cast of The Facts of Life. One of his early television breaks came in 1985, when he joined the popular sitcom as handyman George Burnett.

According to People, the George Clooney Facts of Life years offered an early glimpse of a personality that would later become almost as famous as his acting career. Clooney has developed a legendary reputation for joking around with friends and costars, and according to former castmate Lisa Whelchel, that playful side was already very much present when he was still finding his footing in television.

Clooney made his debut as George Burnett on Sept. 21, 1985, and ultimately appeared in 17 episodes. Looking back years later, Whelchel remembered him as an easygoing young actor who liked basketball, driving around in his Jeep and grabbing lunch with the cast. She joked that he had not yet become the sophisticated “George Clooney” audiences would eventually know.

That carefree attitude occasionally created problems once the cameras needed to start rolling. Whelchel recalled that Clooney sometimes struggled to recognize when the joking needed to stop and the work needed to begin. Crew members occasionally had to remind the future star to settle down and focus. While the George Clooney Facts of Life era apparently did not involve the elaborate pranks he later became famous for, his mischievous personality was already showing.

Years after leaving the sitcom, Clooney remained grateful for the experience. During a 2016 reunion, he thanked Charlotte Rae for making him feel comfortable as a young actor. He also fondly recalled watching Rae wander the set with a banana, trying to turn it into a joke before the two eventually burst out laughing.

The story fits neatly with the playful atmosphere Clooney seems to have carried throughout his career. Decades later, he became famous for practical jokes on friends and collaborators, but those early television years show that the instinct to have fun was hardly new. For fans revisiting the George Clooney Facts of Life connection, it is entertaining to see the future superstar before the polished red carpets and acclaimed movies. He may have been inexperienced and occasionally needed reminders to concentrate, but some parts of George Clooney were already firmly in place.
