Nearly three decades after his death, Gene Kelly remains one of the defining stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. His athletic dancing, effortless charm, and inventive choreography transformed the movie musical, while films such as Singin’ in the Rain continue to introduce new generations to his work.
According to Hello! Magazine, Away from the Cameras, however, Kelly was also a father. The Gene Kelly children—Kerry Kelly Novick, Timothy Kelly, and Bridget Kelly—grew up with a man the world knew as a legendary performer, but they knew simply as their dad. While none followed his exact path into stardom, each became part of the private story behind his enduring legacy.
The Children Of Gene Kelly Chose Lives Away From Hollywood Fame

Kelly welcomed his eldest child, Kerry, in October 1942 with his first wife, actress and dancer Betsy Blair. Born just months after his breakthrough role opposite Judy Garland in For Me and My Gal, Kerry grew up watching her father rise from promising performer to international star. She reportedly shared his love of music as a child but eventually chose a very different career.

Kerry became a child and adult psychoanalyst and studied under renowned psychoanalyst Anna Freud. She later worked with her husband, Jack Novick, and co-authored books focused on children and families. Kerry has also become one of the most visible guardians of her father’s history, sharing personal memories and helping preserve parts of his lesser-known work. She participated in the 2025 documentary Gene Kelly – Real an Rince, which explored his Irish roots and included previously unseen family material.
Fatherhood Changed the Hollywood Legend’s Priorities
Gene Kelly welcomed son Timothy in 1962 with his second wife, Jeanne Coyne. After Coyne died from leukemia in 1973, Kelly focused more on raising Timothy and younger daughter Bridget, even turning down work that would take him far from Los Angeles. Timothy later studied film at USC but stayed mostly out of the spotlight, joking in 1984 that he had not inherited his father’s famous dancing talent.
Bridget, the youngest of the Gene Kelly children, has kept a much more private life. Like Timothy, she grew up as Kelly became increasingly focused on family. While Kerry has publicly helped preserve their father’s legacy, Timothy and Bridget have largely stayed out of the spotlight. Together, their lives offer a quieter look at Gene Kelly not just as a Hollywood legend, but as a devoted father.
