Barry Manilow is facing one of the most emotional challenges of his long career. After more than six decades of singing some of pop music’s most familiar songs, the legendary performer has admitted that he is unsure whether his voice will fully return after lung cancer surgery.
According to The Independent, Barry Manilow’s cancer concerns became public after the singer revealed that he struggled during a recent sound check. The 82-year-old said he did not sound like himself, a frightening discovery for an artist whose voice has carried hits like “Mandy,” “Copacabana,” and “Can’t Smile Without You” across generations.
Barry Manilow Said His Voice Did Not Sound The Same
Manilow said he first noticed the problem during a sound check about a month before his planned return to touring. He expected to hear the voice he had known for decades, but the moment left him shaken. He said he looked at his band and noticed that they were looking down, which made him realize something was wrong.
The singer admitted that he had always taken his voice for granted. Now, after surgery and a difficult recovery, he is taking it much more seriously. His words carried the sadness of someone who still wants to perform but does not know if his body will respond the way it once did. Even so, he said he feels ready to go and hopes his voice will be there when he steps back onstage.
His Recovery Has Been Longer Than Expected

Manilow underwent surgery in December to remove a cancerous tumor from his lung. Doctors later determined that he would not need chemotherapy or radiation, which he described as a reason to feel lucky. Still, the recovery took a difficult turn when he developed pneumonia and spent seven days in the ICU.
The health ordeal forced him to postpone several shows and delay parts of his Las Vegas residency. He also said a visit to his surgeon earlier this year felt discouraging, especially after he had been working hard on a treadmill to prepare for his return. Despite the setbacks, Manilow still plans to begin his farewell tour, The Last Concerts, before resuming his Las Vegas residency later in the year. For fans following the Barry Manilow cancer update, his honesty shows both the fear and determination behind this stage of his career.
