Cher Seeks $1 Million In Legal Fees From Sonny Bono’s Widow

After a five-year legal battle, Cher is asking a federal judge to make Sonny Bono’s widow, Mary Bono, cover her $1 million legal fees. The singer claims Mary tried to exploit the Copyright Act to take royalties that legally belonged to Cher, unnecessarily prolonging the case.

According to Yahoo! Entertainment, the dispute stems from Sonny Bono’s 1978 divorce settlement, which granted Cher a 50 percent share of his composition royalties, including hits like “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On.” Cher also retained half of the musical recordings the duo made together. Fans of the iconic duo have followed the case closely, seeing it as a defense of both her career and her legacy.

Details of Cher’s Legal Motion

In a new motion, Cher’s lawyers argued that Mary tried to gain a windfall by misusing the termination provisions of the Copyright Act. They say Mary took unreasonable positions over five years, forcing Cher to spend $1,023,605.50 defending her rights. The motion emphasizes that Mary’s actions improperly targeted Cher’s earnings, which were protected by California contract law.

The federal judge ruled in Cher’s favor, confirming that the divorce settlement governs the royalties. However, he has not yet decided whether Mary must pay Cher’s attorney fees. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 23. Mary has appealed, claiming that authors and their heirs should retain rights under Congress’s intent. Despite this, Cher remains steadfast in protecting her share of the royalties.

For Cher, the case is about more than money; it is about defending her decades-long career and musical legacy. She has spent years building a name alongside Sonny Bono, and this legal fight ensures her contributions remain protected. Fans admire her not just for her talent but for her unwavering dedication to her work.

The lawsuit also highlights the complexities of copyright law and estate rights in the music industry. An outcome in Cher’s favor would reinforce that artists can preserve their hard-earned royalties, even decades after their original work. This fight proves that Cher continues to defend her legacy with the same determination that made her an entertainment icon.
