Jamie Lee Curtis And Lindsay Lohan’s 22-Year Friendship Made ‘Freaky Friday’ Sequel Happen

Some reunions are just for showbiz and movie promotions, but there are others that hold a little more meaning. For Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, returning to the world of Freaky Friday wasn’t just for a sequel; it was a celebration of a friendship that has lasted more than two decades. A relationship that began when Curtis played mom to a 15-year-old Lohan.

Luckily, the two actresses are back for Disney’s long-awaited follow-up, Freakier Friday. This time, they’re not just actors; they’re now producers, mothers, and seasoned storytellers. And it’s definitely going to be better this time because their real-life experiences will shape and influence their roles.

‘Freakier Friday’ started with a text message

Interestingly, the idea for Freakier Friday didn’t come from a pitch meeting; it came from a text message. In 2022, while Lohan was filming her Netflix movie Falling for Christmas, she got a message from Curtis. “It said, ‘Hey, baby, I’m just texting you because I had this idea,'” Lohan recalled. That message led to months of conversations between the two, which eventually resulted in a full sequel being greenlit by Disney.

For Curtis, the timing was perfect. She had just won her first Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once and was ready to revisit the character. Lohan, who had been slowly returning to acting after years away from the spotlight, saw it as a chance to work again with someone she trusted deeply. Both agreed that if they were going to return, it had to feel real, not just funny, but honest.

‘Freakier Friday’ will introduce fresh characters

Curtis and Lohan are not the same women they were in 2003. Lohan is now a mom to a baby boy, while Curtis is watching her own children navigate adulthood. The pair has revealed that this isn’t just another body-swap comedy. It’s a story about generations, parenting, and what it means to walk in someone else’s shoes at different stages in life.

The new film brings back some familiar faces and introduces a younger generation of characters. Freakier Friday will show Curtis and Lohan’s characters dealing with adult problems, not just teenage crushes or high school tests.
