Fans Say John Goodman Looks Like ‘The Dude’ In Latest ‘Righteous Gemstones’ Trailer

HBO’s hit comedy series The Righteous Gemstones is making a comeback for season 4, as the recently released teaser has fans talking. The 90-minute trailer shows John Goodman’s character, Eli Gemstone, looking extremely relaxed, smoking, drinking, and spending his days in a bathrobe.

Fans are comparing Eli to Jeff Bridges’ “The Dude” in The Big Lebowski, and they wonder if his transformation is a hint at a plot twist in Eli’s life.  It is likely that Eli is taking a step back from his hyper-religious family. Season 3 left viewers with unresolved suspense as Eli’s children, Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin, fight to control the empire.

The previous season saw intense conflict between Eli’s children, with each trying to prove themselves a worthy leader over the other. The family patriarch makes an effort to create a balance in the future of the Gemstone household.

The highly anticipated season 4, which is the final one, will go deeper into the family feud and the reason behind John Goodman’s unexpected change in attitude. HBO has yet to announce a release date; however, reports say the new episodes will premiere in March.

Fans share their thoughts on John Goodman’s retired appearance

Eli Gemstone’s laid-back look was one of the biggest talking points for fans after they saw the trailer. “Eli looks more like Matthew McConaughey’s character Moondog from the movie Beach Bum,” someone commented on YouTube, while another said they are simply excited to see if Skyler Gindson’s Gideon is getting a good story arc.

The likes of Megan Mullally and  Seann William Scott are joining as guest stars, while a fan on X hopes Johnny Knoxville will come on board. “But I love this show, so I’ll gladly take a 4th season to see if it ends in insane Danny McBride fashion. Still want an Eli Gemstone prequel series,” another added, calling for an Eli spinoff.
