Life Behind the Fame

Christopher Walken Lives Off-Grid: Has No Cell Phone, Never Sent An Email, And Watches DVDs

Christopher Walken no cell phone

Christopher Walken has never been one to follow trends, and his approach to technology is no exception. The Severance actor recently shared that he does not use a cell phone, email, or social media.

When it comes to watching TV, he relies on DVDs sent to him by the production team. At home, Walken skips streaming subscriptions and modern devices, keeping a satellite dish as the only tech he allows in his life, and even that sees little use.

Christopher Walken follows the no cell phone rule on and off the ‘Severance’ set

Walken’s technology-free life made it easy for him to fit right into Ben Stiller’s no-phones policy on the set of Severance. Stiller, who directed and co-produced the show, banned phones on set to keep the cast focused and the atmosphere distraction-free. Crew members could only use phones when absolutely necessary, but Stiller insisted on keeping them out of sight while the actors performed.

Without any gadgets to worry about, Walken naturally followed the rule. His tech-free lifestyle aligned perfectly with Stiller’s vision of an immersive set, creating an environment where everyone could concentrate fully while also respecting the hard work of the crew.

He brings Burt Goodman to life in ‘Severance’

Walken plays Burt Goodman, a severed employee at Lumon Industries, in Severance. Burt strikes up a heartfelt relationship with his colleague Irving Bailiff, played by John Turturro. Their bond becomes a key part of the show, especially as Burt’s retirement brings emotional tension to their story.

Walken’s portrayal of Burt earned him an Emmy nomination in 2022. He described the role as a mix of humor, mystery, and intensity, making it a standout experience in his career. The show itself has become a critical success, winning two Emmys and grabbing the attention of fans worldwide with a comeback this year.
