The release of Wicked has roused nostalgia in The Wizard of Oz fans as they replay the 1939 adaptation of the classic. More than eight decades after the film starring Judy Garland, fans are just noticing an error in one of the scenes featuring Dorothy and the Scarecrow.
Fans took to social media to share their discovery, and many were shocked to have just seen the slight detail despite watching Wizard of Oz over and over. The US Library even named the classic the most-watched film of all time, proving its timeless acclaim.
Judy Garland’s life on the set of ‘Wizard of Oz’
The reality of playing Dorothy was far from the glamor on screen for 16-year-old Judy, who faced mistreatment and pressure to deliver her role. She was put on a miserly diet of coffee, soup, and lettuce leaves as the producers wanted her to stay thin, in addition to the frequent use of drugs that birthed her addiction.
Regardless of the challenges, Judy’s delivery of Dorothy goes down in history as one of the most legendary performances in cinematic history. She went on to star in other productions, especially musicals, and was renowned for her charming voice.
Fans react to the error in ‘Wizard of Oz’
The scene causing a buzz among fans showed Judy’s plaits go from shoulder-length to touching her tummy in seconds, showing a continuity issue. “I thought the hair length was different because it took so long to make the movie,” someone joked.
A continuity manager noted that their job was not available back in the day, and set-script supervisors were responsible for keeping track of such errors. “I have watched that movie. I do not know how many times, but I never noticed that,” another exclaimed. Wicked is now in cinemas, with lead actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande doing viral press tours marked by emotional displays as they discuss their roles.
