Catherine O’Hara graced a recent episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Wiser Than Me podcast, where she admitted to sleeping off at a wedding. The groom in question was Catherine’s costar, John Candy, who married Rosemary Margaret Hobor in 1979.
In her defense, Catherine did not mean to make Candy’s wedding seem boring—she simply struggled with staying awake a lot. The 70-year-old told Julia that she wished to spend less time napping, leaving the host shocked and curious.

Catherine and Candy have been friends and collaborators since their teen years, after their first interaction at Toronto’s Second City comedy troupe in the ’70s. The mum of two recalled staying up all night to discuss their ideas, leaving her sleepy all day long.
Knowing his friend well, Candy may not have nursed any grudge against Catherine for dozing off on his big day. The duo worked together on Home Alone in 1990 and Second City’s sketch comedy show SCTV, where she claims Candy was paid way less than his male counterparts.
Catherine O’Hara may have crushed on John Candy
About any sparks flying between her and Candy, Catherine was not sure if he was romantically inclined to her because he was with Margaret. She recalled how lovely he was to her in Second City Theater, though he never spoke about feelings or acknowledged her crush on him.
Catherine commended Candy for standing up for himself and two other underpaid women on SCTV by engaging in a legal battle. He won the fight and grew to be one of the highest-paid collaborators. He died of a heart attack at 43 while in Durango City, Mexico, to film Wagons East, a spokeswoman. To honor her longtime friend, Catherine delivered a heartfelt eulogy at his memorial service and partook in a five-part tribute To John With Love.
