Lukas Nelson is following in his father’s footsteps but proving he’s got just as much talent in his own right as Willie Nelson. Recently, Lukas took to the stage to perform a cover of Willie’s song, “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground,” and his performance is receiving high praise from all who see it.

Lukas is Willie’s son with his current wife, Annie D’Angelo, with whom he also shares Jacob Micah. Lukas fronts the country rock band Lukas Nelson & the Promise of the Real, often shortened to POTR. There, he provides his talents in lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, piano, and songwriting. Here is his thrilling take on a Nelson classic.

Lukas has been quite active on stage—and his work has been making the rounds on social media. Over on TikTok, user @sally_anne77 shared footage of Lukas performing “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground.” The user captioned the post “My heart,” along with an emoji that appears overwhelmed by the musical prowess on display.

The video also includes text over the footage reading, “Do I really need to tell you who his dad is?”

If that didn’t adequately explain that Lukas definitely harbors as much musical skill as his dad, his cover of Nelson’s song certainly drives the point home, and fans can’t say enough positive things about what they’ve heard.

“One of my all-time favorite songs!! So glad he is out keeping this going,” one praised. Another agreed, “My word. He is almost the spitting image. Lol Woowee!!! I love it.”

“Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground” is from the soundtrack for the film Honeysuckle Rose. Willie Nelson wrote and recorded the track, which was released in 1980 as part of the Honeysuckle Rose soundtrack, and then as the soundtrack’s second single the following year. The song became Nelson’s seventh to make number one country chart as a solo artist. There it stayed for a week and enjoyed fourteen weeks total on the country chart overall.

Lukas has cited his dad, Willie, as one of his biggest inspirations as a musician. Lately, Lukas has been performing as a solo artist, especially after POTR announced an indefinite hiatus on June 3; however, the band plans to collaborate again in the future.
