The ‘Sick And Twisted’ Bon Jovi Lyric That Jon Bon Jovi Actually Hates

It is not unusual for creators to end up hating their work, and Jon Bon Jovi of Bon Jovi is not an exception, as he considers the lyrics to one of his biggest hits, “Sick and Twisted.” The song in question was one of the rock band’s best-selling singles peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Although listeners deemed the track a touching song about love and romance, Jovi did not share the same perspective because the story behind it has a darker origin. He noted that the track went against his previous work as a writer, producer, and band frontman.

The song in question is “Always” from the group’s 1994 Crossroad album. The year before, it was originally demoed for a movie titled Romeo Is Bleeding. However, the band withdrew their partnership after an underwhelming screening. Thanks to a friend of the band, “Always” was taken off the back burner and released to become a multi-million-grossing track.

The song’s chorus tells the story of a lover promising to always be present even when “the stars don’t shine, the heavens burst and the words don’t rhyme.” As sweet as these words read, Jovi could not get past his flipside perspective of the song.

Why did Jovi hate ‘Always?’

According to Jovi, the song was about a stalker who he considers to be a sick human being. Knowing the real interpretation of the lyrics, Jovi considered it ironic and telling that listeners generally interpreted it as romantic love. Being a big critic of his own work, Jovi was also unimpressed by a few other Jon Bon Jovi releases.

The 62-year-old recently told People that he was not impressed by their signature song, “Livin’ On A Prayer,” which would continue to chart even decades after its debut in 1986. Jovi recalled how he and his bandmates created the song while experiencing creative burnout, hence their shock at how excellently it did in the market.
