This February marked one year since former president Jimmy Carter entered hospice care. His family members who have closely monitored his situation believe that Carter is coming to the end of his life as he enters a part of “this faith journey” that can only be experienced at the very end.
Born in 1924, president in U.S. history, after George H.W. Bush died at the age of 94 in 2018. He was predeceased by his wife Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96. They had four children together, and grandson Jason Carter has kept the world up to date on the former president’s health.

“[My grandfather] is doing OK,” shared Jason. “He has been in hospice, as you know, for almost a year and a half now, and he really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end and I think he has been there in that space.”
“My grandmother’s passing was a difficult moment for all of us, including my grandfather,” Jason further shared. “The outpouring of love and support that we, as a family, received from people in this room and from the rest of the world was so remarkable and meaningful to us. And it really turned that whole process into a celebration.”
The Carter Center announced on February 18 that the 39th president had “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.”
However, he kept up his old routines as much as possible. Seven months into the transition into this new phase of life, both Carter and Rosalynn made their first public appearance, attending the Peanut Festival together in their hometown of Plains, Georgia.
On the one-year anniversary of Carter’s initial hospice announcement, the family issued a statement sharing, “President Carter continues to be at home with his family. The family is pleased that his decision last year to enter hospice care has sparked so many family discussions across the country on an important subject.”
