Another Mother’s Day has come, honoring the woman in everyone’s lives who made all this possible. Everyone has different ways of celebrating, but one TikTok influencer has sparked a heated debate after saying that grandmothers should not be celebrated on Mother’s Day. Why?

The second Sunday of May has marked Mother’s Day in the United States for over a century. It is characterized by celebrations of mothers, motherhood, and maternal bonds in general, acknowledging the positive effect these have on family and community alike. Here is why, however, mother-of-two Emily Wehner wants to keep grandmothers out of Mother’s Day.

Just in time for Mother’s Day festivities, Wehner took to TikTok to share a breakdown with her roughly 54k followers. Wehner wants to keep the grandmothers out of Mother’s Day. “It is Mother’s Day, not Grandmother’s Day,” she stressed in her video.

She added, “Don’t worry, I’ve talked to my mom about this. She’s fine with it.” This became her number one rule when planning Mother’s Day after one year saw her “pretty sad” from spending the holiday “coordinating grandparent visits.” As a result, “I didn’t get to do anything for myself.” In place of festivities, she spent the occasion with “kids naps” and “hustle.”

The video went on to quickly accumulate over two million views. “This may ruffle feathers for some people, but it’s what I wanna do,” said Wehner as her Mother’s Day rules inspired reactions from both sides of the argument. “I made the boundary, and I’m the one deep into the mothering right now, so I’m gonna take the day how I wanna take the day.”

Ruffle feathers, indeed.

One weary mother related to Wehner’s plight, sharing, “This is my third mother’s day as a mom and it’s 100% about my mom and his mom. I haven’t been celebrated yet.” Another shared, “My step mom told me that Mothers Day is for those in active service not veterans lol.”

However, others were distressed at the idea of not taking time to celebrate the mother who brought all other moms into the world. Discussing the backlash she got with CNN, Wehner noted, “I feel like a lot of people took it as I don’t see my mom or my mother-in-law, which just isn’t true.” However, some viewers don’t like her mindset. “Mothers Day is to celebrate YOUR mother, not worry about yourself,” one criticized, “that is so selfish. Me me me.” Another agreed, “Ya selfish women want your husbands to forget about their moms for you, can’t wait until your kids grow up and do the same to you.” In a similar vein, one viewer noted, “Mother’s day is to celebrate ALL mothers. That includes MIL.”

“Well when your children do this to you and you’re sitting at home on Mother’s day alone when your children are grown, remember you taught them by example ! enjoy your day,” another posited. Another shared, “I was resentful that we spent time with my husband’s mom on Mothers Day. But now both of our moms are dead — I’m glad we celebrated them when we could. We have to remember we are here bc of THEM.”
