The late Three’s Company actress Suzanne Somers died last October at her home in Palms Springs, California. In her final hours, which were meant to precede her 77th birthday party, she was surrounded by her family and husband, Alan Hamel. “Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly,” the family-issued statement read at the time.
Recently, Hollywood entertainers like Glynis Johns, Michael Gambon, and Matthew Perry were honored during the Oscars In Memoriam segment. However, Suzanne Somers was noticeably left out of the tribute. Alan addressed the snub— which also affected long-gone celebrities like Ron Cephas Jones, Treat Williams, and Lance Reddick, in a statement to ET following the awards event.
In the statement addressing the Oscars’ omission of his late wife’s name, Alan noted that he “respect the Academy’s decision to not include Suzanne In Memoriam,” adding that fan love was more than enough. “Frankly, the outpouring from millions of her fans was the kind of In Memoriam Suzanne would have lovingly embraced.”
He ended his address acknowledging Somers’ respect for her well-wishers, and how she “similarly enjoyed a beautiful relationship with the Media and Paparazzi who elevated her career to heights rarely seen.”
“She debuted on Carson in 1973 with her first of 27 books and remained active and relevant until her passing. God bless Suzanne Somers,” Alan concluded.
Although the Oscars failed to mention her, the 75th Emmy Awards paid tribute to Somers and other stars who died in the past year, including Reddick, Williams, Cephas Jones, Norman Lear, Angela Lansbury, and Angus Cloud. The session featured a moving rendition of Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” with photos of the deceased playing on the screen.
After Somers’ death, her family celebrated as well by proceeding with the planned celebration and sharing photos on social media. “Thank you for the outpouring of love and affection for Suzanne. Many of you have asked what you can do to support our family. The most comforting gesture for us is to hear how Suzanne affected all of your lives,” they wrote.
