Reflecting on his use of the quote, Lewis disclosed in a 2008 discussion with Interview magazine that his consistent incorporation of it into his performances played a significant role in establishing him as the primary advocate. “The truth of the matter is that whatever gift I have as a comedian, most of it was in the phrase ‘from hell,'” he told the publication. “I’m credited with popularizing that phrase because I felt victimized by everything.”

But today, he made me sob, and for that, I’ll never forgive him.”

Cheryl Hines, Lewis’ Curb Your Enthusiasm co-star, also took to Instagram to share poignant memories of his time on the beloved American sitcom, highlighting his warm and affectionate demeanor. “He would take time to tell the people he loved what they meant to him — especially in recent years,” she wrote, “In between takes on Curb, he would tell me how special I was to him and how much he loved me.
