Carrie Fisher’s One Bizarre Obituary Request: A ‘Star Wars’ Underwear Rule

Star Wars’ iconic actress Carrie Fisher passed away in December 2016 at the age of 60, and it came as a shock to her fans. Carrie, who was also a writer, suffered a cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles and died shortly after at the UCLA Medical Center in California.

The mother of one was known for her wits and humor, and her obituary request was a reflection of that. Carrie made a standing order as regards how her death should be announced when she dies, irrespective of the cause and circumstance. The late actress wanted it reported that “I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra,” and this is inspired by her role as Princess Leia in the iconic space movie.

According to Star Wars director George Lucas, Carrie’s costume as Princess Leia was needless of a bra because there’s no underwear in space. “I promise you this is true, and he says it with such conviction too!” Carrie joked in her memoir, Wishful Thinking. “Like he had been to space and looked around, and he didn’t see any bras or panties or briefs anywhere.”

She got inspired by the conversation and stated how she wanted her death announced after. “What happens is you go to space, and you become weightless. So far so good, right? But then your body expands??? But your bra doesn’t— so you get strangled by your own bra,” she wrote. “Now I think that this would make for a fantastic obit.”

She made jokes about death

Just a month before the tragic incident on the plane, Carrie admitted to Rolling Stones’ interviewer Andy Greene that she does “fear dying” and would “want someone like me around” in her final moments. “Anything with pain associated with it, I don’t like,” she said. “I’ve been there for a couple of people when they were dying; it didn’t look like fun.”

Carrie knew she was not “going to enjoy dying, but there’s not much prep for that.” Per her dress, and so as to not get “strangled” by a bra in space, Carrie opted for gaffer’s tape underneath for support. “I used to think there should have been a contest at the end of the day for who in the crew would get to help remove the tape,” she humorously recalled in her 2008 release.
