Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, is set to play the late King of Pop in the upcoming biopic, Michael. Jaafar shared a photo of himself in character ahead of production with the caption, “The Journey Starts Monday.” Michael’s son and Jaafar’s cousin, Prince, showed support by liking the post.
Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International announced the principal photography weeks ago, about a year after the movie’s first look was released. In the recent photo, Jaafar did Michael’s signature dance pose, standing on his toes and complete with a fedora hat.
Aside from Jaafar, 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi will play the younger version of Michael in the upcoming film. “This opportunity is really important to me because Michael Jackson is the King of Pop, and he is very special in my heart,” Valdi, who has “been dancing to his songs for five years now,” said.
The lad added that Michael “makes me feel really special and makes me feel good about myself. I love the energy of Michael Jackson.” Both young men will appear in the biopic to give a “riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop.”
Michael will tell the story of the legendary singer who died at 50 in 2009 and “presents his triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic” level. “…from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, exemplified by his most iconic performances,” Lionsgate and Universal Pictures statement to E! News read.
With the promise of a look into Michael’s personal life, it is not certain whether the highly publicized controversies surrounding child sex abuse charges and allegations will be portrayed as well. “As never before, audiences will experience an inside look into one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known,” the production company assured.
