Dot Sharp says she is “really sad” to leave her co-workers and customers as she offered her final service to her granddaughter at the McDonald’s restaurant in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. Dot started working there in her mid-forties and is now retiring as an 84-year-old.
In 1978 when she was hired, McDonald’s was already a thriving business with millions of customers. However, the mid to late ’70s was a period of development for the food chain, which saw the introduction of drive-thrus and the famous Happy Meals in 1979.
In her words to WTAE, Dot shared that she is sad to leave her co-workers. “The people that I work with, they were great, they treated me great all these years, and we have the best customers in the world here,” she told the ABC-affiliate outlet.
The Tri-County Management spokesperson recalled that “the drive-thru line was wrapped around the building because so many of her regulars wanted to wish her well” on her last day at work. “Our customers love her, and so have generations of her co-workers. She brought a sunny disposition to every shift and always made the customer her top priority,” franchise owner Meghan Sweeney said.
During her 45 years at McDonald’s, Dot worked across different sections, which included crew and managerial roles. However, she spent her last decade at the first window of the drive-thru, greeting customers, taking orders, and accepting payments. “That’s the actual function of her position – but it doesn’t capture the essence of who Dot is,” the spokesperson added.
Dot, whose job supported her as a single mom, was said to welcome “each customer with a sunny smile” and a hearty greeting. “She knows many customers by name and order,” the spokesperson added. She witnessed changing administrations, a new location, and the introduction of McNuggets, Happy Meals, and McFlurries.
