Lily Ebert, born in 1927 in Bonyhád, Hungary, is a Holocaust survivor whose remarkable journey has turned her into an inspirational symbol of resilience and commitment to educating others about the atrocities of the dark historical period. She and her family faced the unimaginable horrors of the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, enduring a harrowing experience.
However, despite the challenges, Lily, liberated at 15 in 1945, has dedicated her life to sharing her story and honoring the memories of those who were lost in the Holocaust. Recently, the survivor marked a significant milestone by celebrating her centennial birthday.
Lily celebrated the milestone with a private party with her family and friends. Several notable figures, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, paid tributes to the celebrant. Also, King Charles honored the centenarian by presenting her with a personal letter and a bouquet, expressing admiration for Lily’s impactful contributions to the world despite her life experiences.
“Dear Lily, I particularly wanted to write a personal word on the very special occasion of your 100th birthday,” the letter reads. “The terrible suffering that you and your family endured can never be adequately described or acknowledged, but as a survivor of the horrors of those years, your life’s work has been to remind our generation of the depths of depravity and evil to which humankind can descend, when reason, humanity, and truth are abandoned.”
“By continuing to remind the world of the unimaginable atrocities which you witnessed, you have lived your life positively, with true nobility and without hatred, in a way that is an example to us all. Your extraordinary strength of spirit, resilience, and courage is admired more than I can possibly say,” the letter reads further. “I do hope that you have a very happy day in the company of your family and friends, and this brings you countless thoughts and blessings on such a memorable anniversary.”
In collaboration with her great-grandson Dov Forman, Lily has actively educated the younger generation about the Holocaust. Their efforts extend across various mediums, with a significant presence on TikTok, where she has amassed over 2 million followers.
Together, they authored her memoir, Lily’s Promise: How I Survived Auschwitz and Found the Strength to Live, published in 2021. Lily’s dedication to Holocaust education has not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by her accolades, including an MBE bestowed by King Charles for her noteworthy services in the field.
