Kelly Clarkson did her version of a song from Cher’s new holiday album, which the goddess of Pop performed at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade this year. Kelly performed “DJ Play a Christmas Song” during the Kellyoke segment of The Kelly Clarkson Show, and she blew the audience away with her spin on it.
Kelly was accompanied by a live band which complimented her signature singing style on the track, as she echoed the chorus, which reads, “DJ, play a Christmas song, I wanna be dancing all night long. It’s cold outside, but it’s warm in here. And that’s the only thing I want this year.”
Cher did the album to please fans
Cher was not particularly excited about her recent release, and she admitted to doing one because her fans clamored for a holiday record. “I just didn’t want to do a Christmas album. I wanted to do an album with a Christmas theme that would make people feel happy during the holidays, but I wanted to do a Cher album,” she told ET.

Interestingly, the Christmas album debuted as a chart-topper on Billboard’s Top Holiday Albums a few weeks ago. Plus, the leading track, “DJ Play a Christmas Song” topped the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart last month, earning Cher a first-of-its-kind hit in her career. Christmas was a star-studded production featuring both classic and new-age icons like Darlene Love, Cyndi Lauper, Tyga, Stevie Wonder, and others.
More covers from Kelly
Kelly is fond of sharing her version of songs like she did with Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas,” “O Holy Night” and her very own “Wrapped in Red” to begin Tuesday’s talk show episode. According to her music director, Jason Halbert, the idea for “Kellyoke” came from fans who wanted to hear Kelly’s spin on their favorite music. “I think because of how she started on Idol, covering so many great songs on the show, when I first started with her, I used to get tons of emails from fans requesting that she cover certain songs,” he said.
Although Kelly credits Jason for birthing the segment, he claims to “remember the day that this was my idea.” He did suggest the daily fan request on Kelly’s show where fans could choose what performance they wanted, and she “loved the idea.”
“I have to make sure we haven’t already covered a song, or if we did, is there a way we can present it differently?” he added, per recurring requests.
