Earlier this year, Terry Jon Martin, a resident of Minnesota, was charged with the theft of Judy Garland’s iconic ruby slippers from the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. In August 2005, the ruby slippers, which were valued at an astonishing figure of over a million dollars, were snatched from their sacred home at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Following a series of investigations, the memorabilia was found and recovered in 2018 by the police. However, the suspected mastermind behind the act was only arrested this year.

On Friday, August 13th, Terry Jon Martin, the accused, found himself in a solemn moment of reckoning as he stood before the U.S. District Court in Duluth. The suspect pled guilty to a single theft charge, acknowledging his involvement in a daring heist that dated back to August 2005.

During the courtroom confession, Martin disclosed that, at the time of the theft, he firmly believed that the rubies adorning the stolen slippers were authentic, precious gems. However, his expectations were swiftly shattered when he attempted to sell the stolen items to a buyer who revealed the heart-wrenching truth that the rubies were mere fakes, far from the precious jewels he had so vividly imagined.
Terry Jon Martin’s attorney says Martin might avoid prison time due to his age and poor health
During an interview with Martin’s legal representative, Dane DeKrey, Martin’s attorney, disclosed that he believed the 76-year-old’s challenging health condition has made him exceptionally cooperative throughout their legal proceedings. “I think Terry is facing his mortality, and I think when people are reaching that point in their life, they cut through the pleasantries and talk turkey, so I think he wanted to take responsibility and move on with his life, what little life he has left,” he admitted. “A trial hanging over your head, or doing these things while you’re also trying to get your end-of-life affairs together, just didn’t seem like something that was worthwhile to him.”
While federal prosecutors have indeed reached an agreement on a plea deal with Martin. Martin’s legal representative revealed that he actively advocates for an exceptionally lenient sentence for his client. “The linchpin for Terry [Martin] was a sentence recommendation where he doesn’t serve any time in prison, given his advanced age and health problems,” DeKrey confessed.
