Michael J. Fox’s life took a profound turn at the young age of 29 when he received the life-altering diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 1991. The cause of his diagnosis was unknown, but years later, it was discovered that some cast and crew members from the TV show Leo and Me were also diagnosed with this challenging condition, leaving the world to wonder if something went wrong during the sitcom filming.
The news of his medical condition hit him hard, leading him down a perilous path where he grappled with alcoholism and depression, which posed an even more significant threat to his overall well-being than the initial diagnosis itself. However, the actor has since sought help and embarked on a path to recovery, achieving sobriety in 1992.
Despite the profound effect of the disease on his physical well-being, Fox continued acting until his official retirement in 2021 after he encountered some serious difficulty with speaking. In his memoir, No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, he admitted that his career might be ending.
“There is a time for everything, and my time of putting in a 12-hour workday and memorizing seven pages of dialogue is best behind me…I enter a second retirement. That could change because everything changes. But if this is the end of my acting career, so be it.”
Fox has received massive support from his family and colleagues while navigating his health battles. In his latest Apple TV+ documentary, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, he detailed how supportive his wife has been throughout his health journey. “Tracy’s the smartest person I know,” Fox said. “She’s learned to deal with a lot of different situations. What a strain it must be to bear the load of something that isn’t her burden. She tells me about it. She not only shares it with me, but she also takes on more than I do. She goes through everything I go through.”
Also, at a screening of the documentary in May, several Hollywood stars graced the event and showed their support. “It means so much, especially if you can get Bill to come, you’ve done something. You’ve moved mountains!” Fox talked about how happy he was receiving support from his colleagues. “And Meg. Joan was there. So many people. It means a lot to me because friendship means a lot.”
