Elvis Presley Had a Lifelong Fear of Sleepwalking After Wandering Outside In His Underwear

Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, battled chronic sleep disorders throughout his life, starting with sleepwalking problems in his youth. In adulthood, his career’s demands led to severe insomnia, pushing him to use sleep medication, which significantly altered his life.

Elvis’s ex-wife, Priscilla, detailed the singer’s struggle with sleepwalking in her book Elvis and Me. “In fact, as a boy, he’d once sleepwalked straight out of his apartment, dressed only in his underwear. A neighbor woke him, and, embarrassed, he ran back into the house. Another time, he nearly fell out of a window,” she wrote. “Consequently, to avoid accidents, he slept with his parents until he was grown, and he feared his sleepwalking habit for the rest of his life.”

Priscilla further stated that when she moved in with the musician at Graceland, she encountered a rather unique challenge in their living space. Elvis, being an avid reader, stacked numerous books around their bed. To address this situation and ensure safety, she took a proactive approach by hiring someone to fix the problem to prevent her ex-husband from getting injured due to his sleepwalking.

Priscilla Presley says Elvis Presley’s consumption of sleeping medications was worrisome

The actress stated her concerns about Elvis’ well-being, as he heavily relied on sleep medications, which profoundly impacted him, leaving him disoriented and impaired for a significant portion of the day. “Asking him to make a decision, even a simple one such as what movie he wanted to see that night, was ill-advised,” Priscilla detailed. “He was just too groggy and irritable from the sleeping pills, which were causing him to sleep as many as fourteen hours a day.”

Priscilla also explained that she consistently voiced her concerns regarding his frequent pill consumption, but each time she shared it with him, Elvis was quick to tell her that he meticulously studied medical dictionaries and held the conviction that every substance he administered was entirely safe for usage.
