Even after her death, Lady Diana lived up to her name as a fashion icon. The former Princess of Wales was buried in a long-sleeved black wool dress and wore her favorite piece of jewelry, along with Mother Theresa’s rosary, which she held to her chest.
The world was left heartbroken at the news of her death on August 31, 1997, after she suffered a fatal car crash in France. She died at the University Hospitals Pitié Salpêtrière in Paris following the crash involving herself, her boyfriend, and their driver.
According to reports, Diana bought her burial dress in the South of France weeks before she died. It was a black wool dress with long sleeves. The dress was designed by Catherine Walker, who styled the “Queen of Hearts” for almost two decades. Gala reported she must have worn over a thousand dresses from the designer.
In 2021, the chaplain at her funeral, Father Yves-Marie Clochard-Bossuet, disclosed that Diana also had make-up on for her burial.
Lady Diana was buried in Althorp estate in the United Kingdom. People were moved by the funeral procession and her sons, Harry and William, walking behind the casket. Memories of Lady Di’s funeral are still fresh in the memories of many today, with the photos still making the rounds online after over two decades.
Today, many French citizens still visit her memorial at Pont de L’Alma. On her 26th death anniversary in August, several articles and posts were dedicated to paying tribute to the fashion icon, including the French publication detailing what she was buried in.
