Snoopy will have a new look once again
Snoopy, the world’s most adventurous and accomplished beagle, has been a regular in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1968. This year, however, Joe Cool will look a bit different. 2023 will show the debut of Beagle Scout Snoopy, which itself will promote an all-new show.
Snoopy as a character premiered as part of Peanuts, the comic strip by artist Charles M. Schulz, dating back to 1950. Since his first appearance along Herald Square, Snoopy has taken many different shapes as a float – but this year’s is celebrating a very meaningful five-decade anniversary.
Beagle Scout Snoopy will be the shape of 2023’s Snoopy balloon in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Beagle Scouts and their very first appearance in the Peanuts comic strips. The brand-new 55-foot balloon features Snoopy in his Scout uniform, complete with Woodstock dutifully perched atop his hat.
News of this change-up came at the “Snoopy Lives it Up!” panel at San Diego Comic-Con. This year’s parade will take place on November 23 and will mark the first time this particular balloon flies in the parade, although it’s far from the first and only time Snoopy had a new look for the festivities.
Not only is this the 50th anniversary of the Beagle Scouts appearing in Peanuts, but we are also on the precipice of a new entry in the franchise as a whole. AppleTV, which acquired the rights to Snoopy-related specials back in 2020, is releasing an animated series called Camp Snoopy. The show is due out in 2024.
“After discovering their troop is in danger of disbanding, Snoopy and the Beagle Scouts set off to the great outdoors to earn their merit badges,” the synopsis reads. “Meanwhile, Charlie Brown and friends enjoy their summer at Camp Remote.”
As a character balloon, Snoopy has undergone more unique variants than any other, with nine coming before Beagle Scout Snoopy across eight balloons during 42 separate appearances. Beagle Scout Snoopy will require 50 to 75 balloon handlers after a two-hour inflation process.
