With a career of over four decades and still counting, Tom Cruise has garnered immense fame in Hollywood as the unrivaled number-one action star worldwide. However, despite his successful run, the actor has gotten his fair share of criticism, mainly due to his membership in the Church of Scientology.
Cruise was initially introduced to the church in 1986 by his first wife, Mimi Rogers, with whom he was married from 1987 to 1990. Deeply devoted to the belief system, the actor purchased and renovated the historic English mansion that once served as the residence of Scientology founder Ron Hubbard.
A report revealed that Cruise is actively prospecting new members to join Scientology and has identified zookeeper and wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, the son of the legendary Steve Irwin, as a promising candidate with enormous potential. The actor met Robert during the Sydney premiere of his movie, Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, and it seemed he already likes the 19-year-old.
A source revealed to Woman’s Day magazine that the Golden Globe winner also looks forward to bringing back Steve Irwin’s popular show, The Crocodile Hunter, with Robert taking the lead role. “He was taken aback by how much [Robert] looks like his dad,” the Insider told the publication. “But Tom’s just not interested in recruiting him for the religion – he wants to work with Rob and thinks he could help his production company break into the TV streaming market.”
This is not the first time Cruise has been linked with trying to recruit new members for the church of Scientology, as he had previously made efforts with Seth Rogen and director Judd Apatow. In a previous video from an interview on The Howard Stern Show in 2021, Rogen disclosed to host Howard Stern that the 61-year-old pitched the idea to him during a meeting about a movie project. “A few hours into the meeting, the Scientology stuff comes up,” he admitted. “I’m a huge Tom Cruise fan. I see every Tom Cruise movie.”
He stated that after Cruise presented his proposal, both he and Apatow were in a tense situation as they contemplated on what answer to give. However, Rogen revealed that the director eventually saved him. “Can we come out of this? Are we strong enough to have him do this to us and not be converted? If they got him [Cruise], what chance do I have?” he reminisced. “Thank God Judd was like, ‘I think we’re good. Let’s just talk about movies and stuff.’ Woof. Dodged that bullet.”
