Arkin was born on March 26, 1934, in New York, but his family moved to Los Angeles while he was still young. Growing up, he actually attended several different colleges and dropped out at least three times. When his educational career was in the rearview mirror, Arkin briefly sang and played guitar with folk group the Tarriers, who released the top-five hit single “The Banana Boat Song.” But one branch of his education Arkin had stuck to was his acting lessons, ongoing throughout childhood, and that was how he wanted to make a name for himself.

A well-rounded story of success

Arkin wanted to get into the entertainment industry and he did – in all facets of it, from acting to directing. Not many actors can say they were nominated for an Oscar for their very first starring role, but Arkin wasn’t any other actor, and he was nominated for his role as Rozanov in 1966’s, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. Those were followed by nominations for The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Argo.

Arkin flat-out won a Tony Award for Enter Laughing and a Drama Desk Award for Little Murders, the latter of which he directed for the big screen. One of his most recent triumphs came from his starring role in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method from 2018 to 2019, which earned him two consecutive Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series nominations.

No official cause of death has been confirmed, by time of writing, but it is known that Arkin died at his home in Carlsbad. May he rest in peace.
