Harrison Ford Bids Adieu To ‘Indiana Jones’, Talks Retirement Plans After New Film

Harrison Ford has portrayed his Indiana Jones, known for his signature fedora hat, in five films spanning an impressive 40-year career.  At a press conference held recently at the Cannes Film Festival, the 80-year-old addressed the topic of retiring his renowned character in the upcoming sequel.

In a light-hearted manner, he humorously mentioned his need for a break and some well-deserved rest. “Is it not evident? I need to sit down and rest a little bit. I love to work, and I love this character, and I love what it brought into my life, and that’s all I can say,” Ford admitted. “Everything has come together to support me in my old age, and I love the work. So I just want to work and I want to tell stories, good stories, and I have been so lucky in my life to have that opportunity.”

During the press conference, the actor also shared his thoughts on the utilization of de-aging CGI technology to depict a younger version of his character on the silver screen. Ford expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, mentioning that the visual effects resulted in a remarkably realistic representation. “I know that that is my face. It’s not a kind of Photoshop magic, that’s what I looked like 35 years ago,” he explained. “I think it was used very skillfully, so I’m very happy with it.”

Ford further stated that despite being pleased with the results, he confessed that he is happy and grateful to have grown this old. “But I don’t look back and say, ‘I wish I was that guy again,’ because I don’t. I’m happy to be, you know what? I’m real happy with age — I love being older,” he continued. “It was great to be young, but s— fire, I could be dead, and I’m still working.”

Harrison Ford reveals that he is not retiring fully from acting

The actor confessed that although he is retiring his Indiana Jones character, he still remains committed to working. “My luck has been to work with incredibly talented people and find my way into this crowd of geniuses and not get my ass kicked out,” Ford admitted. “And I’ve apparently still got a chance to work, and I want that. I need that in my life, that challenge.”

However, one of Ford’s Indiana Jones co-stars, Mads Mikkelsen, believes that the 80-year-old still had the energy to work on one more film from the franchise. “We had a night shoot on this film. We wrapped up at 5 o’clock in the morning. We were all completely wasted, wanted to go to bed,” Mikkelsen confessed. “Harrison picks up his bicycle and goes riding for 50 kilometers. Okay? So that was just a, ‘Come on, Harrison. What are we supposed to do?’ So I think there’s a couple more Indies in there.”
