Third Grade Teacher Faces Rebuke For Teaching Students About ‘Legal And Constitutional Rights’

A third-grade teacher, Sophie Anderson, who lives in Austin, Texas, recently got negative feedback for her conduct with her students. Sophie took to her TikTok page to give details of her conversation with the school administrator. “You’d think I was teaching way out west, but this is downtown Austin…” she captioned the TikTok post.

From her social media content, it is easy to deduce that Sophie is invested in political, social, and human causes. Her Instagram bio reads: “I have no other choice but to be political. life is depending on it. unwilling to die for the dow. abortion advocate.”

In the video, Sophie explained how she was presented with a list of concerns about her conversations with her students. “OK, so today I got pulled into a ‘check-in meeting’ with my administrator at school, and she had this lovely list of concerns that she wanted to bring to my attention,” she said.

She had a backdrop of the list behind her, which details some of her “defaults” including how she is “intentionally” educating third-grade kids of their rights. “But my favorite amongst them is, ‘We’ve noticed an intentional attempt at teaching your students about their legal and constitutional rights.’ That’s the concern,” Sophie continued.

Sophie, who identifies as “queer until proven straight,” was quite displeased that the school authorities would oppose educating kids about their rights. “Why are you concerned? Why is that a concern? Why does that concern you?” she said in the video, referring to the school admin.

Most of the People who reacted to the video also agreed with Sophie, while some were unsurprised especially because the incident happened in Texas. “It’s such a mystery why there is a teacher shortage,” someone wrote sarcastically.  A former Texas teacher also added, “…This is why I can’t anymore. Also, leaving Texas this summer.”

Some commenters also responded to the part of the list addressing Sophie’s inclusion of a book series to “grade level lesson plans,” and her violating the dress code. “I 100% wanna know what bs they had to say about your clothes too lol,” someone wrote, while another recalled how they fell in love with reading because their third teacher read Harry Potter to them. “… Mrs. Papish read us HP & I fell in love with reading,” they wrote.
