Matthew Perry is removing Keanu Reeves‘ name from his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. In the book, which discusses Perry’s career as well as addiction, he criticizes Reeves as an actor. His words were met with fervent pushback.

Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing was released in November 2022 and received a lot of strong reactions from readers and those brought up in the text itself. The book also details the Friends alum’s struggles with addiction.

Attending the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, Perry told fellow attendees that he would be removing Reeves’ name from his memoir. “I said a stupid thing,” said Perry to the audience. “It was a mean thing to do. I pulled his name because I live on the same street. I’ve apologized publicly to him. Any future versions of the book will not have his name in it… If I run into the guy, I’ll apologize. It was just stupid.”

In the original version of his memoir, Perry pondered the untimely deaths of other big stars, then wondered why Reeves lived still. “Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us,” the memoir reads, “but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?”

So far, Perry’s memoir has been met with reactions of all sorts, even aside from the Reeves statement. “I fell madly in love with Valerie Bertinelli, who was clearly in a troubled marriage,” claims his memoir. “My crush was crushing; not only was she way out of my league, but she was also married to one of the most famous rock stars on the planet, Eddie Van Halen. It goes on to allege “Valerie and I had a long, elaborate make-out session.”

In response to this, Bertinelli shared a TikTok video with an excerpt from Taylor Swift’s song “Anti-Hero” playing, particularly the part that goes “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me.” The video is captioned, “Anyone misbehave in their 20s and early 30s? Are you mortified?”
