For over a decade, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth were a textbook example of a Hollywood power couple. She’s an Academy Award winner with two Golden Globes and a Primetime Emmy to her name. He’s a talent agent and the co-head of motion picture talent at Creative Artists Agency. However, the two have announced divorce plans, and now millions of dollars are moving around because of their respective and joint successes.

It was first reported that Witherspoon was dating Toth in February 2010 and by that December they announced their engagement. Their wedding took place in Ojai, California’s Libbey Ranch on March 26, 2011. The couple shares son Tennessee, who turns 11 this year. On Friday, Witherspoon and Toth both announced that they were divorcing. The announcement came just two days before their 12-year wedding anniversary. “We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together,” they said. “These matters are never easy and are extremely personal.”

Indeed, they also categorized this choice as a very “difficult decision,” that was reached only after “great deal of care and consideration.” Though it was a mutual decision, a source close to Witherspoon claims, “Reese is obviously disappointed and upset. She never saw herself getting another divorce.”

Sharing and splitting

When Witherspoon and Toth said they decided to divorce after a lot of consideration, this may be an understatement. They’ve reportedly been making financial moves to make the split as seamless as possible as far back as 2020; they reportedly have been liquidating their assets, including joint properties and companies. For example, Witherspoon and Toth sold their media company Hello Sunshine for $900 million back in 2021.

A source also told Us Weekly, “They decided their marriage wasn’t going to last forever and that they should have a plan for splitting up their assets that wouldn’t destroy what they built together.” But one thing that will remain a group effort: raising their son. Another source claims, “They love Tennessee and this is their focus,” adding, “They will continue to co-parent amicably.”
