The original mechatronic model of the alien E.T. has officially been sold at an auction. It was featured at Julien’s Auctions “Icons and Idols: Hollywood” auction which partnered with Turner Classic Movies. While the model of E.T. was the headliner item, there were over 1,300 Hollywood artifacts to bid on.
Someone paid $2.56 million for the model of E.T. which was featured in the 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It was quite the engineering feat for the time period and it ended up winning an Academy Award for visual effects. The model features 85 points of movement.
The auction website read, “One of the rarest and most remarkable pieces of Hollywood memorabilia ever to come to auction, Julien’s is honored to present one of the actual, last surviving, authentic animatronic E.T.’s used during the making of the beloved and cherished blockbuster film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, which captured the hearts of audiences across the world.”
The film’s director Steven Spielberg once said about the mechatronic, “We all kind of regard him as a living breathing organism, he’s a real creature, I think for me, in my experience, he is the eighth wonder of the movie world.”
In addition, the original maquette model of E.T. created by Carlo Rambaldi sold for $125,000.
