Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser recently recalled how he starved himself to maintain his shape for the 1997 blockbuster movie George of the Jungle. He disclosed this during an interview segment with his Airheads co-star and comedian Adam Sandler.
The program was hosted by Variety to discuss the highlights of their careers. Sandler asked Fraser what it was like having to get in shape for the comedy, and Fraser responded with, “The wardrobe that was there was no wardrobe… George wears a loincloth.”
Sandler jokingly revealed that during the filming of George of the Jungle, Fraser maintained a great body physique for the role and that he made everyone else feel intimidated.
“You left Airheads and got very jacked for George of the Jungle. I was disappointed with how good you looked in that. You weren’t supposed to do that to us. You did right by the character. But you did wrong by us, man. You made us feel bad about ourselves.”
Also, the 54-year-old further claimed that he experienced temporary memory loss due to his adherence to the strict dietary restrictions needed to maintain his shape while preparing for the role.
“I was waxed, greased, starved of carbohydrates,” he explained. “I would drive home after work and stop to get something to eat. I needed some cash one day, and I went to the ATM, and I couldn’t remember my PIN because my brain was misfiring. Banging on the thing. I didn’t eat that night.”
In an interview with GQ in 2018, the 54-year-old actor disclosed that he got multiple injuries while performing stunts during the filming of the comedy movie based on the 1960s cartoon of the same name.
He claimed he had spent nearly seven years rotating in and out of hospitals for treatments that included work on his back, a partial knee replacement, vocal cord repair, and bolting together compressed spinal pads. “I believe I probably was trying too hard, in a way that’s destructive.”
