Life in the British royal family is, by nature, rife with subtle procedures, protocols, ideas of decorum, and ways of silently conveying emotions. Tiny details offer a lot of details for tabloids – and maybe even family members – to analyze. So, when the royal family shared a portrait, and Harry and Meghan shared one of their own soon after, experts say there’s a lot of meaning to this.
It’s worth noting that “portrait” doesn’t necessarily mean a painting, in this case. King Charles, queen consort Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton posed for a photo, but the composition is so powerful that it falls into portrait category. Soon after, Harry and Meghan shared one of their own with a lot of care put into the composition. What does it mean?
On September 18, the day before Queen Elizabeth was laid to rest, members of the royal family gathered for a picture. The newly ascended, though not coronated, King Charles was joined by his wife, along with Prince William and the newly-named Princess Catherine. They are all seen smiling, garbed in black, standing in front of ornate sconces and a painting set in a gilded frame.
The official Twitter page of the royal family shared the picture on October 1, captioning it, “Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort with Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales. Taken at Buckingham Palace on 18th September by @ChrisJack_Getty.” After this was shared, a portrait of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan surfaced.
Earlier this week, photographer Misan Harriman shared a portrait composed of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan. “The Duke & Duchess of Sussex,” Harriman captioned the Instagram post, “moments before attending the opening ceremony of @OneYoungWorld last month.” The photo itself, which shows a darkened background with Harry and Meghan smiling as they clasp hands. Meghan is wearing a vibrant red outfit while Harry sports a dark suit. They are standing right beside one another, as they are often seen when in public.
Biographer Tom Bower believes this portrait was a way for Harry and Meghan to say, “we’re back.” The biographer also compared their visibility at the queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and her funeral, when they seemed more visible during the latter occasion. This portrait, the biographer asserts, puts them back in the spotlight on their terms.
