Slapping Chris Rock onstage during the most recent Academy Awards broadcast is one of Will Smith’s public misdeeds many will not forget. This moment of rage and misdemeanor remains memorable for both Rock, Smith and everyone who witnessed it live or on television. Smith has attempted once again to make amends for his action with an open apology directed at his victim, Chris Rock. In a video uploaded to his social media pages, Smith concedes his action was wrong, apologizes to Chris Rock, and tells him he is ready to talk whenever Rock is.
Here is what Will said: “I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk, and when he is, he will reach out. So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.” It is not the first time Smith has attempted to correct his wrongdoing with an apology to Rock. However, Rock still seems uninterested.
Many have criticized Will Smith for failing to apologize to Chris Rock while delivering his Best Actor acceptance speech at the Oscars. But the actor insists he had his reasons. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star has now made his reason clear to the inquisitive public. Smith explained, saying he “was fogged out by that point.” Everything at the event was, to Smith, “all fuzzy.” Hence it didn’t even occur to him to apologize.
It appears it is not only Chris Rock that Smith is convinced deserves an apology for his wrong action. Smith believes Rock’s mom and younger brother, Tony Rock, deserve his apology equally and stated why in the following statements: “I saw an interview that his mother did. That’s one of the things about that moment I didn’t realize; I wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment.”
“So I want to apologize to Chris’s mother; I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically Tony Rock [Chris’s younger brother]. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. This is probably irreparable,” Will continued but accepts they might never accept his apology. On apologizing to the victim of his action, Will said: “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris; I was out of line and I was wrong,”
While one of the two people involved in the remarkable occurrence at the Academy Awards on March 27 has been speaking openly about it, the other has vehemently shunned making references to it, only making jokes about it at his stand-up performances. Chris said he’ll “talk about it at some point” eventually.
