A Lawyer Advises Consumers To Avoid Self-Checkouts

Attorney Carrie Jernigan often gives free legal advice on the social media app TikTok. Her latest piece of advice? Skip the self-checkouts at all stores. She claims that many stores are using security footage at the self-checkout registers to accuse innocent people of theft in order to get a little extra cash. That might sound a little sketchy but she explains what happens.

She references three different groups of people that are being charged with shoplifting. The first group is those with “intent to steal.” The second is “theft-by-mistake,” when people forget to scan an item. The third is the innocent group.

Carrie explained that when stores inventory comes up with items missing “they will begin watching hours of video to see the last person who checked out with the Mario Lego set because they’re two short or an Xbox game. And, for some reason, they pinpoint that they think you did it.”

She added, “The charges that could land you up to a year in jail. You have to spend thousands of dollars hiring a lawyer and we have to go through grainy video footage to try to determine what all you bought that day.” Her advice? Skip the self-checkouts altogether or at least keep all of your receipts. It could also help to pay with a credit card so you can go back and view the transactions for larger purchases.
