Virginia Oliver has been lobster fishing since she was eight years old. Now, she just turned 102 and she’s still going! Virginia, who lives in Maine, is often called the “Maine Lobster Lady” because she goes out on her boat about three times a week.
Just last year, her 79-year-old son Max renewed their fishing license and worked on upgrading the boat. They catch lobsters off the coast of Rockland together. Virginia shared that her late husband and their four children all participated in the lobster hauls each year.
When she was just a young girl, she started lobstering with her brother and father. They fished for lobsters and sardines and sold them to the local factory. These days, she makes sure to eat at least one lobster a week after selling the rest.
Her favorite way to eat a lobster? A traditional Maine lobster roll, of course. She prefers it on a grilled bun with just a little mayo. Virginia still drives, cooks, and bakes, especially when her children come over on Saturdays.
Her advice for living to be a centenarian is to keep moving. She shared, “You just have to keep going otherwise you would be in a wheelchair or something.” Her son also believes that she’s thriving because she kept doing work that she loves.
